Why Film Matters: A Gentle Love Letter to 35mm + 120mm Memories

Captured on 35mm Film

There’s something about film that just… feels different.

Maybe it’s the softness.

Maybe it’s the nostalgia.

Maybe it’s knowing that what was captured can’t be instantly previewed or repeated.

Whatever it is — (in my humble opinion) it holds a kind of magic.

When you add 35mm film or 120mm medium format film to your session or wedding day, you’re inviting in that magic. It’s not just a look. It’s sweet nostalgia. A different place. A way of remembering that’s rooted in intention, patience, and presence.

So what’s the difference?

  • 35mm Film is still photography, but with grain and softness that digital can’t quite replicate. Each photo is carefully composed — no rapid-fire shutter here. It’s romantic, imperfect, timeless. Typically a smaller format, but filled with soul and texture.

  • 120mm Film — also called medium format — brings a nostalgic feel with an elegant touch. It offers larger negatives, higher resolution, and more creative control. Fewer shots per roll and a bulkier camera mean we’re working with slowness and care. This is also where I love to play with double exposures.

    • Double Exposure: Two shots layered within the same frame. What you get is an artful blend — a dreamy intersection of two moments becoming one.

Why I Love It

Film invites intention. It asks us to pause.
To take in a glance, a breath, a touch — and hold it for just a moment longer.
It might feel a little awkward at first to slow down… but trust me: take a deep breath, lean into the moment, and let the softness unfold. That’s where the magic lives.

Is it right for you?

If you’re drawn to softness over perfection…
If you love the idea of your memories feeling like art…
If you want your photos or videos to hold depth and tenderness —
…then yes, film might be the perfect layer to add.
